FURNITURE HISTORY.
The earliest known records tf domestic furniture are found in the "Egyptian bas-reliefs, dating from 4000 8.C., where beds, tables, chairs, and stoods are all represented. The ruins of Pompeii afford a striking example of the furniture of the times, because everything was left in the headlong flight, so that the tourist is' given a vivid glimpse of the domestic and public life of the Romans during the first century. Here was found the best of "Egyptian, Greek, and Roman detail. The cheapness of labour at that, time is clearlv illustrated hv the mosaics of the ancient city, which are infinitely finer than those produced to-day. "Everything required a tremendous amount of work to bring out the exauisite detail in wood, marble, gold, silver, bronze, and ivory. The veneers in figured woods and inlays, often enriched with precious stones, must have required infinite pains in their execution.
