The earliest known records tf domestic furniture are found in the "Egyptian bas-reliefs, dating from 4000 8.C., where beds, tables, chairs, and stoods are all represented. The ruins of Pompeii afford a striking example of the furniture of the times, because everything was left in the headlong flight, so that the tourist is' given a vivid glimpse of the domestic and public life of the Romans during the first century.
