DECREASE SHOWN
UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES. AREAS IN BRITAIN. DEVELOPMENT OF INDUSTRIES. (United Press Association—Bv Electric Telegraph—Copyright.-) (British Official Wireless.) Received November 25, 10.32 a.m. RUGBY, Nov. 24. A considerable improvement in the' economic position of the special areas of England and Wales which suffered most acutely from the economic crisis of 1931 is recorded in the report of the Commissioner, Sir George Gillett. The report shows that unemployment in these areas has fallen by 25.6 per cent;, of which only a small part is due to the transference out of the areas. The greater part of the covery has been independent of the Government armament programme. In some cases the defence programme has retarded development, as the demand for constructional materials has been so great that the erection of new factories has been delayed. The Commissioner expressed his determination to press forward with the development of new industries.
