WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

MEETING AT OROUA DOWNS. At the November meeting of the Oroua Downs Women’s Institute Mrs Dench presided over a fair attendance. Visitors were welcomed from Taikorea and Glen Oroua. Mrs Marsden was also welcomed as a new member. A very interesting report on the council meeting was given by Mrs Smith. It was decided to hold a Christmas treat for the children of the district. This is to take the form of a fancy dress party. Several juvenile items will bo given. It was also, decided, owing to December being such a busy month, to cancel the usual monthly meeting. A very interesting talk was given by Miss Johnson on home science and nutrition. This was much enjoyed. A vote of thanks was accorded Miss Johnson. Arrangements were made for a series of dressmaking classes to be given by Miss Johnson to local members as well as neighbouring institutes. The following \nere the results of the competitions: Senior class, chocolate sponge. Mrs Bird 1. Mrs Proctor 2. Junior class, Christmas gift, Dulcie [lhristensen 1, I. Proctor 2. The floral competition for the b°st vase of flow;rs was judged bv Mrs Schaw and Mrs Gray, of Glen'Oroua, and resultjd : Mrs Dench 1, Mrs Hobbs 2. Afternoon tea was served by the lostesses. AWAHURI INSTITUTE. The boisterous iveather probably ac:ounted for the small attendance of numbers at the November meeting of ;he Awahuri ' Women’s Institute. Apologies for absence were received rom Mesdames E. 0. Bond, Christian md Redmayne. A motion of sympathy ras conveyed to Mesdames Brock and 1 ’Parrel 1. , A warm welcome was exended to Miss Dowsett (Woodville) iv Mrs Rowlands, who presided over he meeting. Members were pleased to icar that Mrs Simpson is making favourable progress and hope she will soon be back with them. It was decided, if the weather is suitable, to hold the December meeting at Mrs Christian’s residence, when there will be the usual Christmas stall. Congratulations were extended to Mrs L. Matthews, on the birth of a daughter. A euchre and dance gathering is ro be held to raise funds for the picnic. A vote of thanks was conveyed to Mrs and Miss Bennett for their donation of a tray and cloth for competition towards the Blind Institute birthday gifts. Mesdames Rowlands and Nicholson were appointed to arrange the exhibit at the Feilding Flower Show. A letter of thanks was received from the secretary for the leper station. Mrs Terry gave an interesting and full report of the half-yearly council meeting. The flower competition ivas kindly judged by Mrs Hastie and the hairpin work by Miss Dowsett. The results were: Flowers, Miss Henson 1, Mrs Redmayne 2, Mrs Terry 3: faneywork, Mrs Nicholson 1, Miss Matthews 2. The members then had the pleasure of listening to a travel talk given by Miss Henson, on her recent trip to Australia. Many and beautiful were the photographs Miss Henson! passed round as she touched on the various places of interest. The competition was “jumbled New Zealand towns,” and was won by Miss Dowsett', The hostesses were Mesdames MacCallum and Lucas, and Misses Foster and MacCallum. It was decided to visit Wanganui on December 8 and those desiring to go were asked to let Mrs Bond know, so as to arrange for cars, etc.
