MANAWATU COMPETITION

ENTERTAINING DISPLAYS

The inter-club matches played under the control of the Manawatu Football Association were continued at the North Street Park on Saturday afternoon. The ground was in a firm condition and fine displays of the code resulted.

The senior matches resulted: Rovers 8 v. Athletic 2; Thistle 3 v. St. Andrew’s 2.

Tho senior points table is as under:

ST. ANDREW’S v. THISTLE. The game opened with up and down play. Owing to Allen’s persistence Thistle drew first blood, when soon after the commencement he was able to score. St. Andrew’s turn was not long in coming, however, and a smart sortie on the part of Lyon and Bell into their opponents’ territory enabled the latter to score.

St. Andrew’s preferred to play a defensive Jjame and it was not, until Lyon and Bell had essayed several more sliots that the play opened up. The St. Andrew’s combination, which had been rather weak at the start, had greatly improved, and their aggressiveness became more apparent as the game progressed. Bell and Lock were in good form and gave their opponents some anxiety. St. Andrew’s invaded the Thistle territory, but upon reaching the penalty area an off-side kick was awarded against them, though without success. From a movement on the right wing Young received the ball and made no mistake. Just prior to half-time Thistle adopted defensive tactics. Allan attempted to improve the aggressiveness of his men, but his efforts were unsupported. At half-time the score was St. Andrew’s 2, Thistle 1. Thistle opened the second spell in a more aggressive manner and made several attempts to draw level with St. Andrew’s. A minor injury was sustained bv Lyon when, as he was about to head 'the ball into the Thistle goal, he came into collision with Kempson, subsequently receiving medical attention St. Andrew’s- broke away again, but their attempt was frustrated by a quick recovery on the part of KempRon. Thistle gained the equaliser when Blaikie kicked a spectacular goal Up and down play ensued until the termination of the match, a few minutes before which Allan received his second chance and made no mistake. Thistle 3, St. Andrew’s 2. The referee was Mr A. H. Hesketh. ROVERS v. ATHLETIC.

Rovers beat Athletic by 8 goals to 2 in a dull game. Holden (4), Laing (2), and Kendall (2) scored for Rovers, while Dingwall and Metcalfe secured the Athletic goals. Mr Geekie was the referee. I OTHER RESULTS. Auckland. —In the medal competition Ponsonby 5 beat Comrades 2, Abels 7 beat Thistle 1, Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys 1 drew with North Shore 1. Christchurch. —Western 8 v. i.M--C.A.
