(From Our Own Correspondent.) OPIKI, July 21. The Julv meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in the Had on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs B. A. Norman presided and welcomed visitors frem Palmerston North. Tho motto for the month was, Enthusiasm has the privilege of not knowing monotony.” Mrs White presented the Jinancial statement for the month which showed a credit. Tho result of the recent dance held in connection with the gardening circle also showed a considerable credit. An invitation was received from the I oxton Women's Institute to attend their seventh birthday party next, month. A demonstration upon scissor painting and alno upon craven painting was given by Mrs Childs, of Palmerston North, at the end of wliich she was accorded a vote of thanks for a very interesting display. A competition for the best worked apron not costing more than Is 6d was won by Miss D. Irwin first and second, and Miss J. Southcc third. The best gingerbread resulted- Mrs L. Carson 1, Mrs Webb 2, Miss j. Sou thee 3. In the gardening circle competition, for vio’ets, Mrs Aitcheson was first, Mrs Irwin second and Mrs Percy third; collection of blooms, one of each kind, Mrs Aitcheson was first, Miss Oooksley second, and Miss Webb third. Tho gardening circle will Lake the August meeting and the competition is to bo for a miniature floating bowl to he done in a saucer. A lecture upon the growing and classification of bulbs will also bo given. The hostesses will ho Mesdamos Aitcheson and S. Horn and Misses B. Jackson and E. Marriott. There will he a working bee on August 11 in conjunction with the Hal Committee, to begin a clearing by tho hall for a shrubbery. ' Messrs R, and D. Mabv have rchtrned to Hopolands after paying a round of visits in the district. Mr and Mrs Bond have returned from a holiday spent in Taranaki. Mr A. IWntsoo, Rangitikei. was the guest of Mrs .T. >taby for the week-end. Cantain B. A. Norman is at present with lr's regiment in training at Danncvirke.. Mr Noel Foierabend, of Dannevirke. is' at nresent tho guest of Air and Mra *T. .Mabv. The friends of Mr N. Berentsen will ho interested to know that ho is now with the Police Force on duty. Miss M. Wilson has returned from a holiday spent in the Feilditg district. A meeting of tho lron.l branch of tho Farmers’ Union was held cm Monday evening. Mr T. D. Aitcheson presided over a good attendance of members. The visitor for the evening was Mr E. G. Madden, of the Plant Research Station. With tho use of lantern slides Mr Madden exnlained the work of the station, in its effort to select pure strains of tho best producing grasses. An interesting evening was spent., many questions being put to the lecturer concerning local management con ditionfl.

Mrs D. Wilde* presided at a meeting of the Wo’|en’s Institute gardening circle, the business being in connection with the schedule for the forthcoming bulb show. The secretary (Mrs J. Aiteheson) announced that many generous trophies and donations had been promised.
