WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.
OROUA DOWNS. The monthly meeting of the Oroua Downs Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs Dench, there being a fair attendance. A number of visitors from Palmerston North were welcomed, also Mrs Stan Boyden as a new member. It was decided that the lecture at the next meeting be arranged by Mrs Hobbs, the subject being early Maori conditions taken from W.E.A. lectures. In place of the bring and buy stall which is usually held to raise funds to meet the contribution to the federation, it was decided to hold a competition for a duchess set donated by Misses M. and A. Christensen. Mrs Gates kindly donated a trophy for the junior member with the most entries in the points prize competition other than the prizewinners. At a suitable juncture a presentation was made to Mis* Erica Gray in view of her approaching marriage. A demonstration of braSs work was given bv Mrs Oliver and much interest was shown by the members. The following were the results' of the competitions :—Cushion made from scraps of wool. Mrs H. Shailer 1, Mesdames N. Scott and Albrey equal 2; junior class, machinemade apron, Miss D. Christensen 1, Miss C.' Albrey 2; floral competition, vase spring flowers. Airs Bird 1. Airs Howard 2; hat made from sheet newspaper and pins. Airs S. Baydsn 1, Airs W. Shailer 2. The following are the hostesses for next month: Alesdn.mes Henry Shailer, Hall. Blair, Proctor, Jamieson, Harold Shailer. A dpinty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses.
