AOKAUTERE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) AOKAUTERE, July 19Two old and esteemed residents, Mr and. Mrs J. J- Knight., were tended a farewed , evening in the ball lost week, 'lhe dis- 1 trict was well represented, and visitors were present from Maliarahara, Bainesse, ' and Palmerston North. . The time was j pleasingly spent in dancing, and the fol- j lowing items were interspersed : Songs, : Mrs A K Greves; elocutionary items, Mrs D. Scott and Miss Hazel Lankshear, Mr j R. Scott eulogised the guests of the evening in a happy speech, and mentioned that, as Ml- and Mrs Knight were to spend their retiring voars in Palmerston North, ho need not wish them “good-bye, but “an revoir.” Mr W. R- Ilopcroft. on behalf of the settlers, asked tile guests to accept tho gift of two fireside chairs, as a token of the esteem in which, they were held. Musical honours were given, after which both Mr and Mrs Knight suitably replied. Dancing was continued., and the evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Svne.’ The Women's Institute held their monthly meeting, when Mrs A. Greves presided over a. good attendance. Arrangements for the concert and danco were finalised. Next month is tho birthday montli, and all members were asked to bring a friend. The competition for August will be: Senior, best pot- of marmalade; juniors, best plate of three pikelets. Members will supply tho afternoon tea. It was decided not to’ bold a danco in the evening this year. The date of the annual flower show was decided upon. The speaker was Sister Smith, who gave a most interesting talk on the cities and the customs of India. The hostesses, Mesdames R. Scott, Groves and D. Scott, arranged two competitions, which were won by Mesdames N. Cliowen and S. GL’shnan. An elocutionary item by Mrs D. Scott, and a. pianoforte solo by Miss Enid Orr were appreciated. The’ competition, which was for tlio best article made from an old felt liat, was won in tlio seniors by Mrs E. Brungar, and in tho juniors by Miss C. Field.
