DOMINION TOURISTS. NEWCASTLE BEATEN. NEAVCASTLE, July IS. The New Zealand hockey team yesterday defeated Newcastle by three goals to two. In view of the visitors’ indifferent showing in their previous games, it was anticipated that Newcastle would win, but New Zealand, although below international standard, recorded a one goal victory. Tho local side, a fast and scientific one, could press inter-State teams, but New Zealand, thanks to Clark and Mahoney, repulsed its dangerous attacks. The New Zealand forwards were weak on defence. Duffield and Alonteitli were the only men to break the Newcastle defence through their splendid understanding. Clark, the New Zealand full-hack, was the outstanding man on the field. At half-time New Zealand led by 2 goals to nil. Newcastle was dangerous after the interval. Smellie, the New Zealand goalkeeper, repelled six shots, kicking with rare judgment. Newcastle scored twice in an exciting finish. For New Zealand, goals were scored hv Duffield (two) and Monteitli, Reid and Gunn scored for Newcastle.
