Won by a length and a half, the same distance between second and third. After many delays at the start there was ultimately a perfect dispatch. Renardo led at the half-mile with Fairford and Goya II prominent. Fairford was in front at Tattenham Corner wnh Goya II handy; Cash Book was improving his position rapidly. Goya II was ahead at the three furlongs with Le Grand Due coming up. Cash Book was buffeted and fell back. 4 Perifox temporarily appeared likely to take part in the finish, then Midday Sun, with a dazzling run, wore down a blanketed bunch of seven horses and stood off Sandsprite’s challenge. Le Grand Due, though he had tlie° running on the rails, was unable to make an impression on the two outsiders. The race was run in bright sunny weather and the track was hard. There was an immense crowd. This is the first time women owners have entered the first and second horses. THE KING CHEERED. CONGRATULATES THE WINNER. (British Official Wireless.) Received June 3. 11.30 a.m: RUGBY, June 2. The King and Queen had a great welcome from the crowd, estimated at a quarter of a. million, when they drove on to Epsom Downs this afternoon and, together with other members of the Royal Family in the ltoyal Box, watched the Derby. The owner of the winner, Mrs Miller, is the first woman to win a Derby at Epsom arid she was congratulated by Their Majesties. The King gave a dinner party to members of the Jockey Club at Buckingham Palace to-night. Wherever Englishmen congregate, no matter in what quarter of the globe, the Derby always lias an inlerest for them ttiat no other race in the world has. It was established nearly 160 years ago, and today is the richest classic in t lie British Empire, the stake, with forfeits, amounting to approximately £IO.OOO. Last year the total stake was £9934 ss. Yesterday’s race will probably be round alixi.t the same figure C. Sm.ke (Le Grand Due) won previously on Windsor Jjful find Ylnlimoud. If 'Le Grand had won it would have completed the “hat trick" for flic Aga Khan.
