RIVER BOARD.
MAN A WATU-OROUA AREA. The bi-monthly meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board was held to-day, Mr }A. A. Mitchell presiding. There were present: Messrs T D. Lvnch, H. J. Lancaster, B G. Gower, R. J. l*nw, W. Jackson, ». £>■ Carter and H. Seifert. A vote of sympathy with Mr J. Callesen in the‘death of his sister was carried and Mr Calieson was granted leave of absence.. „ „ , ~ It was decided to vote £3 3s to the George V Memoral rund. It was reported that at a meeting at Foxton Mr C. L. Huutei, -<• ■> had said that the Government was. going to protect the Manawatu River and prevent flooding. The Government line! given a definite undertaking, had said, in this respect, and surveys were being made. “We .must protect the people.” he had said. Every acie Joat through flooding was an acre lost to production. , , Members regarded the statement as. very satisfactory. ... Mr H. R. Farquhar, consulting e - g'neer, waited on the board wit reference to willow planting schemefor protective works. H® state that the major protective work in INO. 1 area. including Newman s and Nicholson’s bends, liad been complete: under the loan, but the cost had been over tlie estimate, due to increased labour costs, and there was 'not suradent money left to consolidate tle present 'work with willows. It was decided to leave the expenditure of the sum of ££o, fhe balance of the lean, in the hands of Air Law
