DEBATING CLUB.
SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT. The first part of the meeting of the Palmerston North Debating Club, last evening, was given over to an address by Mr H. J. King, his subject being “Wool.” This was followed by a series of impromptu speeches, as follows: —Mr L. L. Hay, “Romance”; Mrs Smidt, “Oranges” ; Mi' K- Remington, “Art of Giving” ; Mr G. Buinett, ‘Old Age”; Mr K. Dean, “Gossip.” The main debate, “That Government by Experts Should Replace Government by IV ill of the People, ocupied the second half of the evening. Those taking part were: Messrs R. Allison (leader), L. McPhee, J. S. Hornblow; S. G. Laurenson (leader), C. 'Richardson, and M. H. Boyce. The verdict was given in favour of the affirmative. Both the impromptu speeches and the debate were judged on a vote taken under the headings: Matter, delivery, and effectiveness. The Murray Cup was won by Mrs Iv. Dean and the S. M. Carlton Medal for the debate was won by Mr S. Laurenson.
