ISLAND RISES 600 FEET. ENTRY TO RABAUL CUT OFF. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received June 1, 1.40 p.m. SYDNEY, June 1. Communication by sea with Rabaul lias been cut off . owing to Vulcan Island rising 600 ft and closing tlie entrance to Rabaul Harbour. Dry land now extends from Vulcan Island to Matupi Island. Mr W. R. Carpenter lias received advice that the Burns- Philp Co.v.’s town wharf and foreshore buildings have collapsed, apparently owing to an earth subsidence. Tho company advises that Matupi is again erupting and the position of Rabaul is becoming dangerous.
