(From Our Own Correspondent.) NEWBURY, May 31. The monthly meeting of the Newbury Women's Institute was bold in the. Hall; there was a good attendance and in the absence of Mrs E. A. Shaw (the president)' Mrs A. K. Simpson was in the chair. After the usual business was disposed of, the afternoon took the form of a social gathering and a happy time was spent with items and competitions, Mrs Lucas, of Awnhuri, gavo two elocutionary items, and the competition (lighting the most candles with one match) was won by Mrs M. Hansen, Miss A. Wild being second. Airs Sanne. one of the most esteemed members, who is leaving the district was presented with a posy and gift from the institute. Airs Sanne, thanking tho members, said she had spent many happy afternoons with the members and was very sorry to be leaving Newbury. Another pleasant item then took place, when Airs Simpson, acting president during Airs Shaw’s illness, and Airs R. Purlon, who has carried out the duties of treasurer since the formation of the institute, were both presented with posies and a small gift in appreciation of their work, Airs J. Chcetham making the presentation. Both ladies thanked tho members. The posies were made by Alcsdiinos K. Verry, N. Wood, and .1. Clieetliarn. The competition for the best apron made from a sugar-bag was won by Airs J. Lancaster, with Mrs W. Pcubcrthy second and Mrs Chcetham third. The hairpin duchess set was won by Airs J. McCauley. The hostesses were Mesdamos CTioetiiam, M. Baker, 'Miss iVild. The competition for next month will be the best four plain oven scones, and the demonstration will be flowers made from wood--IJ'xhc euchre and dance was well attended and the following were the prize-win-ners • Ladies, Airs Cribb 1, Airs V it hers 2, Mrs Jenkins 3. Alcn. Mr Withers 1, Mr Bannister 2,, Mr Neil Chcetham 3. Ihe iced cake donated by Mrs J. Chcetham was won bv Air Connelly. Dancing was enioved, the music being supplied by Mr 1> Collins and Mr Powell. The hosts and hostesses were Mr A. McCulloch. Air S. Morris. Alesdamcs A, MCiilloeh, J. Chcetham, E. A. Shaw and Hamlin.
