AWAHURI.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) AWAHURI, Feb. 23. Kai Iwi pa was the scene of a largo gathering on Saturday evening, to celebrate the 21st, birthday of Mrs J Cowan, a very popular resident. Over 200 guests were present. Dancing occupied most ot the time, while a variety of musical talent enlivened the intervals. A beautiful cake adorned tho central tabic in the supper room, which was tastefully decorated with streamers and flowers. An ample suppci was enjoyed, by all. Mr W. Ward spoftc of the esteem in which the guest of lionour was held in the district, and her win* ingness to help in any way, with her musical talent, all projects of a public nature. He presented her with a golden key and called for cheers, which were given with musical honours. Mr Salt also said a few words in support of the previous speaker, :\lr and Airs Cowan replying. The popularity of Mrs Cowan was reflected m the largo number of beautiful presents she received. Among these who rendered items were Songs, Mr I. Baker and Mrs Lindcgrcn; hula dance, Miss Simeon; instrumental trio, the Bing Boys (Palmerston North); action songs, Maori ladies; song, Mr Young ■, tap dance, Aliss I c Oka; duet, Mr and Miss Young. Songs and instrumental trio by three young, men from Rarotonga wore special features that were greatly appreciated.
