ASHHURST.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHIIURST, Dec. 7. A full attendance of committeemen wore present at a meeting held recently in com nection with the Public Domain and Cemetery. Mr W. Brewer was in the chair. The receipts for the quarter, it was reported, amounted to £6 10s, and the expenditure was £6 ss. Work at the Domain is being carried out satisfactorily. The caretaker reported that the pine trees planted during tho winter were growing and were healthy; new ropes have been put on the swings, and the blackberries cut down. It was decided to plant willows where necessary along tho river bank. Following an inspection of tho Domain by tho committee, it was. agreed to paint tho gate and pickets at the entrance near the bridge; also, through the bush track, to place seats along the walk. The old lotara slabs which, many years ago were erected at the graves of a former Maori cemetery, arc in a very bad state, and are to be replaced by a wooden crosss, thus marking this sacrod spot. A parking area is to bo cleared near the sheds. With these improvements, the Domain will bo in good order-for the coining picnic season. The cemetery is to undergo a general clean-up and the caretaker's cottage is also on the list to have attention. Receipts for tho quarter amounted to £l2 13s, the expenditure being £4 14s. On Friday afternoon, the ladies of the Methodist Guild held a social, to which many friends were invited. Mrs C. A. Foston, the president, extended a welcome to all, and wished all a very happy Christmas season and a prosperou New Year. Mrs A. Currio kindly provided each of those present with a small floral spray. One member, Mrs Williamson, who has attained her 75th birthday, was handed a very beautiful shoulder spray from tho members. One of the members. Mrs Finlay, who is ill in hospital, forwarded a letter in remembrance of the final gathering for the year. This was read, and all joined in wishing Mrs Finlay a speedy recovery. Those who assisted with tho programme wore: Pianoforte solo, Miss Kathleen Brewei ; song, Mrs p. Maul; recitation. Miss Joan Barclay; duet, liesdames Thomson and Curtis; recitation, Mrs Peck. A competition on jumbled letters of flowers was won by Mrs Maul. A bring-and-buy stall was held, with the result that £3 2s was raised. This is to bo donated to tho circuit funds. Afternoon tea was partaken of, being provided by tho ladies. The guild now goes into recess until March, 1937. The Methodist Sunday scholars held their anniversary on Sunday, when, at the morning service, there was a good attendance. Tho singing by tho children was greatly enjoyed. Tho pulpit was occupied by Rev. C. A Foston. who gave an interesting address. The Psalm reading was taken by Glen Cawood ; a duet was sung by two little girls, Joan Barclay and Joan Tunnicliffe; and the Lesson reading was given by Master R. Currie.
