MATCHES IN THE MANAWATU. Several competition matches were contested by Manawatu howlers on Saturday afternoon, the Northern and Palmerston North greens, in particular, being fully engaged. Players were not favoured by very satisfactory conditions. the latter part of the afternoon being marked by heavily overcast skies, which turned to rain when the matches had barely been concluded. FLETCHER SHIELD. The Palmerston North and Northern Clubs were engaged in a match for the Fletcher Shield, held by the former. Four rinks from each club played at tho other’s green and oil the aggregate scores of the eight rinks Palmerston North, retained the trophy by 162 points to 142. Northern were at home to Manawatu in an Ainslie Shield match, when Manawatu sent two rinks in quest of the trophy.
