MANAWATU COMPETITIONS. GOOD BATTING PERFORAIANCES. Light, steady rain and a bleak wind in tlie late afternoon made playing conditions anything but pleasant for players taking part in tlie Manawatu Cricket Association’s competitions on Saturday afternoon. Batsmen held the ascendancy and a number of fine scores were registered in the senior A and senior B divisions. On the Sportsground oval, Old Boys put on 245 and City had opened their innings for 5 runs for no wickets when play ended. Playing Y.AI.C.A., United hit up 336 runs for 5 wickets, and at the High School Palmerston reached tho big total of 391 runs for 5 wickets. Old Boys made 108 against Ivia Toa on the outer area at the Sportsgi-ound, in tho senior B section, the latter replying with 216. Old Boys have 25 runs in hand without loss in their second innings. City’s first innings against Y.AI.C.A. amounted to 218, and Y.AI.C.A. have 116 runs on for 4 wickets. Combined Services’ first innings total was 179, and in reply to that H. L. Young’s have 2 wickets down for 34 runs. Aleeting High School at the Sportsground, Combined Services made 99 in their junior A match with High School, and School’s first innings also amounted to 99. Services secured 6 runs without loss before rain interfered with play. In tlie matches at Terrace End Park Alassey College made 173 against Old Boys, who hn.ye 154 runs in hand for 4 wickets. United’s first innings went to 146, aiul Optimists had S wickets down for 127 when rain stopped play. Playing on the Hokowhitu ground in the junior B section Y.AI.C.A. scored a three-point win over City. THE HONOURS BOARD.

SENIOR A. OLD BOYS v. CITY. N. GALLICHAN’S GOOD STAND. Playing a more restrained game than usual, N. Gallichan carried his bat in from the opening innings of Old Boys against City. He ga.vo few chances, being content to wait until the right ball came along before he stepped out. Gallichan’s innings possibly lacked brilliance, but it was solid enough to keep tlie tail-enders going and enable Old Boys to compile 245. AVhite played vigorously, nine fours being included in his total, until, at 51, he tossed one up which AA’heatley, running smartly behind the bowler, snapped up. AYaters and Hearsey played solid games, while Spring kept with Gallichan for some time. C. AlcA’icar was freely used, bowling 25 overs, which included 5 maidens; he was a source of danger throughout, taking six wickets for 68. City Council had lost one wicket for 5 runs when stumps were drawn. The scores are :; OLD BOYS. \\ r aters, b C. AlcA’icar 31 Hearsey, b C. AlcVicar 23 Anderson, 1.b.w., b C. United gave Y.AI.C.A. an afternoon chasing leather, pulling stumps with only live wickets down for 336. Olliver set tho ball rolling with a fine 92. At 70 he had a “life” when lie was dropped to a sweet ball in slips, but his was practically a chanceless innings. Scoring all round the wicket, lie rattled up fourteen fours. He was backed up by Spiers, who was content to allow his partner to do the scoring while he stayed in for three hours to make 36. Cutler was unlucky in missing his century. Playing vigorously, ho scored fifteen fours and a six, and seemed to have the measure of the bowlers until lie played one of Spelman’s on to tlie wicket. Penman (42) and Ross (20), who wore undefeated, were playing all around the wicket and despite the greasy pitch and the steadily falling rain, seemed to be well set. Spelnnin ‘ was again a tireless bowler and the only one to keep the batsmen thinking. In 38 overs he had 14 maidens. The scores are : UNITED. Olliver, c AVeir, b Spelman 92 Spiers, b Downes 36 A. The batting was exceptionally good in Palmerston’s first innings against Higli School on tlie latter’s ground, and when the play for the day ended they had on 391 runs for 5 wickets (declared). The first three partnerships realised 64, 65 and 85 runs. Aloloney hit four boundaries in 23 runs, and when he went out Robertson and Norris hit the hall about freely. Robertson bettered the lialf-century by six runs and was then clean howled by Downes. AI. Ongley took the bat and the pair made the scoring lively. Norris hit only five boundaries in 71 runs. Leet was the next man in and his contribution amounted to 87. Pegden (64) was with Leet, the partnership having yielded 171 runs, when stumps were drawn and and innings declared closed. SENIOR B. OLD BOYS v. KIA TOA. AA’itli the “hat-trick” performed against them and eight wickets down for 113, Kia Toa did not appear to be about to better the Old Boys first innings total of 108 to any great degree. However, the next partnership, between Brown and Bell, advanced tlie score to 137 and then Brown and Heatley were associated in a brilliant last-wicket stand for another 79 runs, leaving Old Boys to contemplate a reply amounting to 216. Just as the rain commenced to fall Thompson sent three Kia. Toa men from the batting crease with successive balls, and then the rain intervened to make conditions most difficult. Brown settled down well and swung the ball all round tlie field for ten boundaries, while the two batsmen who were successively associated with him added their smaller quota to the mounting aggregate. Old Boys had had a bad start with 3 down for 11. but Jennings and Swindell advanced the total to 96. Jennings making 53. Swindell, incidentally, brought the last Kia Toa partnership to an end with a meritorious catch. The details are as follow : OLD BOYS. First Innings. CITY v. Y.AI.C.A. GOOD OPENING STAND. City opened strongly against Y.AI.C.A. and, with Lang and Perrin at tho wickets, had 87 runs in hand before the first wicket fell. Lang and Lyne then took the score to 111, Lang reaching 70. Baigent and Lovejoy put in some good work in lifting the total from 122 to 190 and the innings closed at 218. AlcAlinn took six wickets and Hornibrook three. Y’.ALC.A. batted steadily for 4 down for 116, 53 having been made by Hornibrook. who hit six fours and one six. The details are:— CITY. COAIBINED SERVICES v. H. L. YOUNG’S. WILSON BATS WELL. Owing largely to a splendid score of 77 by AV. H. Wilson, Combined Services made 179 runs in tlie opening innings of their match with H. L. Young’s. Wilson’s was not a chanceless innings, but it had all the more merit in that he was handicapped through still bearing the effects of a strained muscle in one arm. Hancock was the only other batsman to better 20, and when H. L. Young’s had 34 runs in hand for the loss of two wickets a heavy shower fell, leading to a decision to close the

day’s play at that point. Tho individual scores are as follow: COMBINED SERVICES. Winks, c Houghton, b Hassell ... 4 Millar, Ibw, b Hassell 2 W. H. SERVICES. Two first innings scores of 99 runs each were seen in the meeting of High School and Combined Services in tho junior A division on the outer area at the Sportsground. Combined Services had first use of the bat and reached the figure stated, Woodley contributing 25 and Lamont 21, with Wills 17, not out. In the bowling. Lucas took 3 for IS, Rowland 4 for 26 and Rose 2 for 2. After having 6 down for 30, School made a great fighting stand and equalled their opponents’ score, Robbie contributing 44. He was the only batsman to reach double figures. Wills secured 4 wickets for 32 runs, Coates 3 for 24 and Morgan 2 for 23. Services had 6 runs in hand without loss when the rain forced an adjournment. OLD BOYS v. MASSEY COLLEGE. Massey College met Old Boys at Terraco End and batted first, compiling 173. The best scores were made bv Ball 80, Begg 18, and Pierce 19. Bowling for Old Boys, Waldograve took 8 wickets for 63 runs, and Nansett and O’Keefe took one wicket each. Rain put a premature end to tho game and at stumps Old Boys had on 154 for 4 wickets (O’Keefe having contributed 29, Nansett 65, Aikmarn 33 not out). OPTIMISTS v. UNITED. United batted first in their match with Optimitsts and compiled 146; Cutler 74, Ward 17, McGregor 16. Bowling for Optimists, Bailey took 4 wickets for 23, L. Zaloum 4 for 21 runs, Rice 4 for 49, and L. McNabb 1 for 27. At stumps Optimists had made 127 runs for 8 wickets (McNabb 40, Phillips 13, Rice 37).

JUNIOR B. Y r .M.C.A. and City met in the junior B section at the Hokowhitu ground. Y.M.C.A.’s first innings realised 100 runs (Holland 22, Gaston 25, Allen 21; McDonald 4 for 33, Blackwell 4 for 38, Goldfinch 2 for 24). City’s effort amounted to 71 (Wiggins 31 not out, Leo 13; Houghton 5 for 16, Holland 2 for 35, llomerill 1 for 8). Y.M.C.A.’s second strike stood at 1 wicket down for 50 runs when rain stopped play (Maden 14 not out and Gastin 34 not out). Y.M.C.A. thus secured a threepoint win. HAWKE CUP. WAIRARAPA BEAT RANGITIKEIThe Hawke Cup cricket elimination match between Wairarapa and Rangitikei, at Marton, was won by Wairarapa by 63 runs. The last two hours of the match were played in steady rain, the tenth wicket falling at 6.50 p.m. in a bad light. The reason for carrying on in sncli conditions was the inability of the Wairarapa team to play to-day. HAWKE’S BAY BEAI POVERTY BAY. Per Press Association. NAPIER, Dec. 5. O’Brien and H. Reaney batted forcefully and attractively for a partnership of 296. Both in batting and bowding Hawke’s Bay showed superiority, the visitors finding the fast and even wicket difficult to handle. THE COUNTRY MATCH. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Doc. 6.
