PAHIATUA

PAHIATUA, July 13. Fire completely destroyed a nineroomed house, of two storeys, at Kiritahi at an early hour yesterday morning. The building was owned by Mr W. Marlow. There were living iii the house Mr and Mrs Marlow,' Mr and Mrs Bartlett, a youth, and six children. At 2.45 a.in. it was found that the sitting-room was well alight. Only a few pieces of furniture and personal effects wore saved. A strong wind was blowing from the house away from the outbuildings, none of which was burned.

The following are the championship points gained by the teams in the Bush Rugby Union’s junior grade competition :—-Hukanui 16, Ngaturi 15, Marina 11, United 7, Nircaha 7, Konini 4.

Teams from the Pahiatua and Makomako Golf Clubs met at the week-end in a friendly match at the latter’s links. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies under the leadership of Mrs IV. G. Eising. There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Social Guild. Rev. K. L. 'Warren opened the meeting with a short prayer. Miss A. Henderson read the report covering the year’s operations, and Miss L. Hick presented her report as treasurer, both .statements being considered very satisfactory. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs K. L. Warren: vicepresidents, Mcsdames Can-ad,. R. L. Barley and 11. Paterson; secretary, Miss Henderson; treasurer. Miss L. Hick. Mrs K. L. Warren proved the winner of a competition for the most useful and ornamental article made from a sugar hag. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames Richardson and Macdonald, after which a competition was held, Mrs Warren obtaining the prize. A golf match was played at Hnmua at the week-end between ladies’ teams from the Pahiatua and Hnmua Golf Clubs, 'fhe match resulted in a win for Pahiatua by 51 to 3J. The following are the scores, the' local ladies being mentioned first:—Miss H. Ross lost to Miss M. Warner, 5 and 3; Miss L. Arrow lost to Miss B. Bourkc. 2 and 1; Mrs S. IC. Siddells lost to Mrs R. .T. Sinclair, 6 and 4; Mrs Morgan beat Mrs R. .T. Smith, 2 up; Mrs W. L. Tattle and Miss A. Henderson. all square: Mrs L. AT. Graham beat Mrs Wolland, 3 and 2; Miss H. Junker beat Mrs Carrutbors. 4 and 2; Mrs A. J. Goer beat Mrs Watkins, 7 and 5; Miss M. Ah-Shcny beat Mrs Sutherland, 10 and S.

The wedding was so'emnised at the Methodist Church, Pahiatua. recently, of Annie Rita, eldest daughter of Miami Mrs Leo Harding, of Tlopelands, and Horace Joseph, third son of Mrs and the late Mr Sowrv, of Makomako. The bride, who was '-'veil nwnv Inker uncle, Mr E. Harding, of AYoodville, was attired in a. costume of saxe blue sc'-ge and carried a sheaf of white roses. She was attended by her sister, Miss Jessie Harding, as bridesmaid, while Mr L. Sowry acted as best man. The officiating clergyman was Rev. C. M. Roberts and Mr J. J. Boage.v presided at the organ. Mr and Mrs Sowry’s future home will be in Makomako.

The wedding took place at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, recently, of Dulcie Evelyn, daughter of All- and Airs I’. Davies, of Ha.mua, Pahiatua. and Raymond John, son of AL-s and the late AL- A. Henrv. of Konini, Bnhiatua. Rev. K. L. Warren officiated. The young couple will make their future home at Konini.

The prizewinners at the weekly euchre party at Afangatainoka were Alef-dallies Williams and Ker.rison (first and second respectively) and Alessrs A. Kerrison and H. Aanensen. After supper a dance was held, music for which was provided bv Ah- AlcDottgull. There was an unusually good attendance at the euchre party at Alangamutu. Afr Ra.nkin won the men’s prize and Afr Garliek was second. The ladies’ prize was annexed by Airs C. Hewitt, with ATrs Groves in second place. After supper the usual dance programme was carried through till midnight. Messrs TL Pilkington. P. Bisset and C. Connell went to Wellington on Saturday to attend the first reunion of the New Zealand Machine Gun Corps. Air J. \!a-be,v, of Konini, who recently sustained severe burns to the arms and face as a result of an explosion of blasting powder, is on holiday at Rakaia recuperating. He is tlie guest of his daughter. Airs Woods.
