(From Our Chm Correspondent.) UONGOTEA, July 13.
There was a good attendance of Rugby enthusiasts at the local grounds on Saturday afternoon, when Sanson seniors met Uongotea • > wliat was anticipated would be a hard struggle. Before the commencement of the game both teams observed one minute’s siicnco as a mark of respect to the late Mr P. M. Gedyo of Sanson. The ground was in soft condition, and heavy showers during the afternoon added lo the general discomfort. Rongotea lost the toss, iiid defended the northern goal. From the start both sides began to .open up the play, but very soon the ball becamo too slippery to handle and the ground was worked into mud, which resulted in the game becoming a contest between the two sets of forwards. Play was interesting though not brilliant, the blacks having slightly the advantage at this stage. From a throw-in near the blues’ corner flag, Pedersen, the black winger, secured to dive over for the opening try. M.' Gard•lor's kick at goal was a good effort, but failed. Both sides were working well, but there was no alteration in the score before half-time. Kicking off again alter the interval the blues went to the attack, Hurst,, one of the visiting forwards, doing good .work. Finally, the blacks took play lo the other tnd, where they kept the blues busy. Cook ur.d Bromley were working well for the home team, Lnlt try as they would could not penetrate Senson’s defence. Eventually, the blues broko away to go right down to the blacks’ goal line, where Saxton was called on to save 111 two or three occasions. Keeping up the pressure the blues had their opponents defending and the latter had to force down twice at short intervals. Finally, the blues’ efforts were rewarded and they scored a try, from a scramble on the line. From tiiis on play was up ;nd down the line till time was called with the score, Sanson 3. Rongotea 3. Air It. Scott controlled the game. Congratulations to Rongotea seniors, as the resit.t of this game feaves them wit tiers of the AlcKelvic Shield. They only required a draw to will.
