OBITUARY.

MISS FRANCES I. HASELDEN. The death occurred at Bemucra, last week, of Miss Frances I. Haselden. at the age of 94 years. Miss Haselden was once one of the leaders in tho scholastic profession, and she was the original principal of tho Kuuranga Girls’ School, Thames, which then was the largest and iuos t important girls’ school in the Dominion, possessing a roll of over 300. For a long period she had been living in retirement, and in her later years she was stricken with blindness. She received her education in England, where she was born, and she maintained a strong mental activity to the end, articles on many subjects being daily read to her. Her sister, Mrs E. Calvert, of Feiiding, is 96 years of age and lives a comparatively active life. The late Miss Haselden was the daughter of Air Charles Haselden, and she came to New Zealand as a young woman. Two brothers predeceased her. They were Mr C. J. Haselden, who was an under-secretary in the Government service, and Judge J. Haselden, of the District Court. Other brothers arc Mr F. 11. Haselden, once AI.I’, lor l’atea and now of South Africa, and Canon J. Haselden, of Auckland.

MRS. JESSIE JOLL. There passed away at her home in Cambridge Street, Levin, on Sunday, Airs Jessie Joll. The deceased lady, who was 65 years of age, was a very highly respected resident of tho town. Airs Joll was born in England and came to New Zealand with her parents, Air and Airs G. Thompson, nearly 50 years ago. The earlier years of lier lile were spent in Napier and Hastings. She was married in 1896 at Hastings to the late Mr T. M. Joll, who predeceased her in February of this year. With Air Joll, who throughout his liletime had been engaged in the timber trade, Mrs Joll went to Levin some thirty years ago, and although of a very modest and retiring disposition, her interests being centred largely in the work of her church, she endeared herself to all with whom she came into contact by her very quiet, cheerful and kindly disposition. In addition to one brother, Mr H. Thompson, of AV'hakatano,, she is survived by a family of five sons and two daughters.
