RETURNED SOLDIERS’ BALL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WOODVILLE, July 13. One of the most enjoyable functions of recent years was the R.S.A. annual ball held in the Drill Hall on Friday evening. Despite the heaviest fog for many years the attendance was a particularly large one, local “Diggers” and their friends turning out in largo numbers. A feature of tbe ball was the smoothness with which all arrangements were carrier! out and tho committee urc to be congratulated upon the succees of their efforts. The music by a Palmerston North orchestra was all that could be desired and the well-balanced programme of old-time and modern dances was thoroughly enjoyed by the dancers. Supper extras were played by Aliss G. Johnston and Ah* N. Bar tie and the duties oF AI.C. were carried out by Air A. Cook.

At a concert and dance held mder the auspices of the Papatawa Womens Institute there was an excellent attendance of members and friends. Items were given by Palmcratcn North and Woodville artists. Mr A. Sundborn delighted the audience with guitar selections and with Air Burke an instrumental duet was given. Eccentric tap dances were contributed by Mr T. Alim and Mr Burke’s rendition of “The Body in the Bag” was much enjoyed. Mr G. Johnston played pianoforte solos and Air R. Thorne’s sketch, Snuffing the Candle,” proved popular. The sec-, ond half of the programme was supp.icd by male residents of the district who staged a mock Womm’s Institute meeting. Jt met with a hearty reception and caused much merriment. Baker; hostesses, Air Taylor and Mr Sandbrook Supper was served after tlie concert nid d;iicing was then enjoyed to music by Mrs J s. Nelson, Mrs O’Hagen, and Aliss Johnston. All’s Bickins (president of the "nstitiite) thanked Mr W. Brown for bringing tho performers from Palmerston North, and others who had helped to make the programme so successful. PERSONAL.

Air and Airs F. W. Boulton, Kumcroa, who have been visiting Christchurch have returned home. Aliss Al. Lys, who has been the guest of Air and Airs C. Forbes, has 1-oturned to Hastings. Air mil Airs W 11 Nelson who wefo in Wellington to farewell Air and Airs 11. P. Ilornc, who left for the East, have returned to Woodville. The friends of Air A. H. Ilustwick will he pleased to lea »i that lie has returned home after being an inmate of tlie Dantievirkc Hospital for the past tin weeks. Air and Mrs R. Russell have returned from their honeymoon md prior to taking up their residence in Woodvihe, they are staying at Paliiatua for a few days. '
