MUNICIPAL BAND.
On. Thursday evening the Municipal Band's weekly practice was held, there being a moderato attendance. It was announced by the conductor (Mr It. Lowe), in regard to the forthcoming competitions, that members would be graded as A and B sections and handicapped in the ordinary manner. It is intended to hold the competitions, subject to a hall being available, during the first week in August. The A grade instrumentalists will submit an “air varie” solo limited to ten minutes, while the B grade will be called upon for a slow melody. The duets will bo by combinations of A and B grade members, the partnerships to be decided bv draw
These competitions, at which medals aro awarded,| are mainly for the purpose of stimulating interest among the members who. during the winter months when the services of the band are in little demand by the public, find no incentive to attend the practices. Medals, or the necessary provision for them is usually made l>v public supporters of the municipal enterprise, from which source it is expected they will again be forthcoming.
