RACECOURSE STANDS.
RE-ROOFING OPERATIONS. Excellent progress is being made with the work of re-roofing the stands and reconditioning other buildings which were damaged at the Awapnni racecourse during the storm of February 2, in readiness for the race meeting to be held next month. The fine weather aided the earlier work, and the operations were planned so that when rain fell the men were working under a roof and were thus able to proceed without hindrance. The re-roofing of the outside stand is all but completed, and the workmen are now engaged on the lining. It is expected that a commencement will be made very shortly with the roofing of the main stand. The work is being carried out on lines which will give the buildings added resistance to wind stresses. Iron stanchions have been installed and the columns strengthened with new foundations where this is considered necessary, steel columns being substituted in the case of the main stand. Both stands are to be painted and it is proposed to erect a concrete balustrade along the front of the stands, replacing the wooden handrails. Other buildings on the course are being attended to so that all will be in first-class order for the coming meeting-
