GARRISON BAND.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Palmerston North Garrison Band Committee met last evening, Mr J. A. Nash presiding. Others present were Messrs W. il. Cadwallader, J. Creighton, AV. H. Brown, C. G. Hayvvnrd, AV. Petersen, S. AA'ilson, B. Davidson, N. D’Ath, Thomas and C. Pike (conductor). Apologies for absence were tendered on behalf of Mrs D. Evans, Messrs F. J. Oakley, G. Tremaine, and B. L. Cl. Aitcliison. A resolution of condolence with the relatives of the late Bandsman G. Bergersen was carried in silence, and it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to the bereaved parents. Mr Brown reported that he had attended the practice and, on behalf of the committee, had welcomed lour new bandsmen, Messrs D’Ath, Unwin, McLeod, and Tretlieway. It was stated •that Bandsman 11. Shackleton had reconsidered his decision to withdraw from the band, and would remain an active playing member. Mr Hayward was appointed to wait upon the City Council at its next meeting to stress the urgency of fencing the Sportsgionnd. The draft annual report and balancesheet were received. Deference was made by the chairman to the impending departure of Mr Cadwallader, who was congratulated upon his promotion to Dunedin. A resolution was passed placing, on record appreciation of his services. Upon the motion of Mr Hayward, a recommendation that the general committee consist of 13 non-playing members, six playing members and one representative each from the City Council and Defence Department, was passed for submission to the annual meeting. Mr W'ilson was delegated to confer with the Pipe Band regarding that organisation making use of the Garrison Band Hall for practices. The conductor reported that ‘the band had attended the funeral of the late Mr Bergersen and also the Sixth Mounted Biles Camp, the younger members of the personnel being responsible for a very good performance indeed. The competition for the llobert Cup would he completed on the third Monday in May, and an invitation was extended to the committee to be present that evening. So far as playing members were concerned, the band’s prospects were never brighter. It was decided to endeavour to enlist the support of the 50 000 Club in having the 1938 brass bsuid contest held in Palmerston North. The committee resolved to place on record its appreciation of the courtesy and facilities given bv Captain G. M. McCaskill to the band during its stay in camp.
