WITH ROD AND GUN

ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. LIBERATION OF PHEASANTS. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society was held last evening, Mr R. W. Priest presiding. Others present were Messrs W. H. Seward, E. E. Ward, C. Nielsen, A. H. Marshall, F. Withers, H. W. Scott, W. Procter, C. Lane, F, Haley, W. Woodmore. W. H. Hosking, H- Lane, W. R. Procter, E. G. Matthews, and F. A. Orr. Advice was received that a winter season for perch fishing had been authorised for the months of May, June, and July. This action had been taken after receiving the rangers’ reports. It was reported that the balance of the branch’s quota of pheasants had been received and liberated. Fifty had been distributed in the month of March and thirty recently. Comment on the failure' of the society to notify the branch of the arrival of the birds was made by Mr Matthews, who said it was a ridiculous situation. Though there were seventeen members ou the branch not one Knew when the birds had arrived or where they had gone. On liis motion it was resolved to request headquarters to notify the chairman or secretary in future before any similar action was taken.

The Wellington Society, it was stated, had been compelled to review its arrangements owing to adverse happenings, and though it had been intended to keep 200 cock birds until after the shooting season, under the circumstances which prevailed it had been necessary to release all the birds --—a total of 550—before the shooting season.

Subject to the consent of the Manawatu Racing Club, it was decided to undertake the construction, on the Awapuni racecourse, of a holding pond estimated to cost about £BO.
