CASE AT AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 23. The exploits of five young men, aged 18 to 23, during the past fifteen months culminated in their apperance in Court this morning, on a total of over 70 charges of breaking and entering and theft. Accused were Norman Tomlin, aged 18; Edward Tomlin, aged 21; Archibald Burroughs, aged 23,; Keith Sly, aged 20; and Alfred White. All ‘pleaded guilty, excepting Norman Tomlin, who denied being involved in the theft at the Kunieu Post' Office, when the safe was stolen. He was committed for trial and the others for sentence. The police said' that after five telephones had been stolen on March 3. Constable Boag (New Lynn) located a motor-car without a hood, and the two Tomlins and Burroughs were arrested by Detective Aplin eight days later. As a result of further inquiries tho other accused were arrested on March 2G. The evidence showed that, " among other crimes, the Kumeu Post Office was broken into on August 17. The safe, containing £2l in stamps and money, was removed and later broken open, and the Post Office was burnt to the ground shortly after the burglary. Sly, in a statement, attributed the fire to nil oil lamp probably being overturned when carrying out the safe. Richard Walker, aged 72, nightwatchman at Tattersfield’s factory, which was broken into on t October 23, gave evidence that he was assaulted by several men, one of whom, during the struggle, caught his legs from behind. Four of the accused pleaded guiltv to burglary at Tattersfield’s. After being dealt with in the Supreme Court, the live accused will appear in the Police Court on summary charges. All were granted bail.
