IMPORTANT MEASURES.
GOVERNMENT’S PROGRAMME. EMPLOYMENT LEGISLATION. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, April 8. By Governor-General’s message in the House of Representatives this afternoon will be introduced a further important instalment of the Government’s programme. There are two Bills —the Promotion of Employment Bill an'd the Labour Department Amendment Bill.
The first is a comprehensive measure bringing together the variety of powers which are considered necessary to deal with the development of industries and the creation of further openings for the utilisation of labour, as recently described in. these columns. The changes in the Department of Labour recently foreshadowed by Hon. H. T. Armstrong are to be given, statutory effect in the Labour Department Amendment Bill, under which the Unemployment Board will be abolished and-most of its functiomns taken over by a special branch of the Labour Department, while tlie organisation required in connection with the Promotion of Emplovment Bill will function in close association with the department.
The House has given good despatch to the Government’s legislation so far, and when it puts through the Railway Amendment Bill at to-day’s sitting there will only be left on the orderpaper the measure approving sanctions and the Arbitration Act Amendment, which cannot be debated until it has been reported on by the Labour Bills Committee. Evidence will be invited from the interests concerned, and the committee will not be able to commence its important business until after the Easter holidays. However, the introduction of two more Government measures this afternoon will provide Parliament with sufficient work when it resumes on the Thursday following Easter.
