MEAT CONSUMPTION
CITY’S ANNUAL REQUIREMENTS. During the year ended March 31, some 6483 cattle, 578 calves, 17,401 sheep, 1913 lambs and 1517 pigs were slaughtered at the Palmerston North municipal abattoirs, making a total of 27,892 head, according to a report submitted by the manager (Mr A. M. Spilman) to the City Council on Monday evening. There was an increase of 1246 head over the previous year, notwithstanding decreases of 307 and 313 respectively in the number -of calves and lambs killed. Stock slaughtered during March consisted of 4452 cows, 91 heifers, 34 bullocks, 42 calves, 180 lambs, 1002 ewes, 572 wethers and 119 pigs. Sixteen cows, 11 sheep and 16 pigs were condemned. Fees received amounted to £386 14s 3d.
