HELPING EX-SOLDIERS
SUBSIDY FOR R.S.A. KAIRANGA COUNTY’S VIEWS. At the monthly meeting of the Kairanga County Council, yesterday, a letter was received from the president of the Palmerston North R.S.A. (Mr B. J. Jacobs) stating that last year, when the council was framing its estimates, provision had been made for the subsidising of labour supplied by the association under its scheme of unemployment relief. That subsidy had not been expended and, candidly, he had omitted’ to see the county engineer about it prior to the close of the financial year, stated the writer. He wondered what the attitude of the council would be in relation to that unexpanded subsidy (which 'in the case of the Palmerston North City Council subsidy was always allowed in cash against the monthly allocation paid by the association). The question was * also asked what the council could do for the association's unemployed members this year. Although the numbers on the association’s rolls requiring asistance had materially decreased, there was no certainty that this condition would continue throughout the year, particularly in the winter season. It was hoped that some provision relating to the unexpanded subsidy, and for further assistance, would be included in the council’s programme for the year just entered on. . The chairman (Cr. D. Collis) reported that he had seen Mr Jacobs and had explained that the expenditure of the money in hand could, not be carried out in cleaning drains before April, because they would be full of weeds by winter if attended to before that date. That money would be expended, he had explained, and there was a possibility of an increased contribution being made. The council, said the chairman, was very pleased with the arrangement.
The council decided to write to MrJacobs explaining the position as to the non-expenditure of the funds in hand, and also advising that a further subsidy would be considered when the estimates were being framed.
