CATERPILLAR PEST.
LOSSES IN THE NORTH
Per Press Association. WHANGAREI, March 18. Myriads of caterpillars are devouring grass-in all the areas in the north which have been subjected to flooding in recent months. Not a trace of green leaves has been left by the insects, which strangely enough pass by grass on land, no matter how small, which was untouched by the water. The caterpillars, when crossing roads on the march, cover completely the surface of the highway, and motorists are astonished at the spectacle.
Farmers are appealing to the Agricultural Department for advice. It is believed the cold weather will end the plague, but in the meantime the destruction of grass is seriously worrying the fanners.
