(From Our Own Correspondent.) BULLS, March 16. The Rangitikei Golf Club’s season opened on Saturday in fine but windy weathor. Thofe was a good attendance of members and visitors, including several from Bel-1 moot and Seafield. A mixed foursome re-j suited in Mrs Jessop and J. S. Tricker j winning, with Miss Galbally and W. Aiken 1 runnors-up. The course was in splendid 1 order, and a very successful season is, anticipated. The Rangitikei Ladies’ Golf j ! Club will open, the season on Thursday with an 18-hole foursome, the draw taking place at the golf-house at 1.15 p.m, . i The Dofence Rifle Club fired on the open range at 300, 500 and 600yds on Saturday, weather conditions being cold, with a strong rear wind. Simpson, 28 —31 —59. j On Saturday next a team will bb sent to | Mangaweka' to take part in the association shoot there. The Farowanui School dance and euchre party drew a large attendance on Friday i evening, the Town Hall and supper room being well filled, and the function was a pronounced success. A professional orchestra from Palmerslon North provided bright music, and the M.C.’s carried out their duties capably. At cards the ladies’ prizes w«re won by Mrs F. Clark and Mrs Z. IJart (consolation:, and 'hi- men’s prizes by Mr H. Bowen and Mr H. Carpentier (consolation). A friendly week-end game was played 'between Marton and Bulls Bowling Clubs on the Bulls bowling green, which was in fine order. The result was a draw, particulars of which are ns follow, Marton players being mentioned first: —Baskin, Mogridgo, Barton, Rayner (skip) 16 v. Ellery, F. Stevens, Wilson, H. Mr W. A. Doughty, whoso death occurred at Bulls lost week after a short illness, was born in Wanganui in 1852, and two years later came with his parents, the late Mr and Mrs John Doughty, to Bulls, where he resided until he passed away at the ripe age of 83 years. When he grow to manhood ho took up fanning in partnership with his brother Andrew, securing some 500 acres, part of which is known as “Willow Glen,” near Bulls, as well as properties at Ohakea and Stanway. On the death of Mr Andrew Doughty, Mr William Doughty continued to farm successfully, but retired some six or seven years ago and came to live in town. Thirty years ago he married the widow of the late Mr Joshua Taylor, and thero were two children of the marriage, a son (Philip) and a daughter, the latter dying when i 6 yeai;s of age. Mr Doughty is survived by bis widow and son. Although not taking | a prominent part in local affairs, Mr | Doughty did a great deal of good in a I quiet way, and his kindly disposition made j him universally liked and respected. For many years he was a member of the Marton A. and P. Association, and he was patron of the Bulls Croquet Club, and a | life member of the Bulls Bowling Club and the Rangitikei Racing Club. He was a generous supporter of these bodies, and j in this respect will be greatly missed | Pioneers, of whom few remain, will also | regret the passing of one of Nature’s gentlemen, who had a word of advice and cheer for all. The interment took place at the Clifton Cemetery on Tuesday, the cortege being a very lengthy one, and representative of town and country, many I persons coming long distances to pay their , last respects to an old comrade. The vicar f of Bulls (Rev. B. R. White) officiated at the graveside, and the pall-bearers were . old associates of the deceased. Messrs T. , R. Lambess, W. Frecklington, J. J. Mansell F. Read, A. W. Amon and F. 0. Bailey. Deep sympathy is felt for the | bereaved ones in their sorrow. I Constable Arthur Ede and Mrs Ede | went to Wellington on Saturday, Mr Ede being on annual holiday. Constable R. j G. Busch, of Palmerston North, is in charge of the Bulls police district at present.
