NOTES ON THE GAME. With a very sticky wicket, the outfield heavy a.fter the- rain and a cold wind blowing, conditions were not by any means favourable for the Manawatu Cricket Association’s competitions last Saturday. Those recording the scores did so from within closed cars, owing to the condition of the grandstand after the hurricane. Scoring was remarkably low, only two senior batsmen managing to pass the half-century mark. J. Rose (Old Boys) played an aggressive innings for 45, during which lie hit three sixers. However, he was dropped several times, besides which it was not difficult to find a gap in the field. There were some very unusual features about the junior B fixture between Kiwi and Old Boys. AYaldin contributed 33 of Kiwi’s total of 41 for the first innings, his team-mates managing to sdratch together only 8 runs. Bowling for Old Boys in the second innings, Triggs, who finished up with a bag of 4 wickets for 7 runs, dismissed four batsmen with four successive halls. He captured three wickets with his last three balls of the third over, and then broke the leg stump in taking his fourth wicket after achieving the “hat trick.” Combined Services, in their junior A fixture with Y.M.C.A., had to submit to defeat after just failing to last out the time limit. The winners captured the final wicket just a few minutes before time expired.

PLUNKET SHIELD. WON BY WELLINGTON. LAMASON’S FINE DISPLAY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Eeb. 11. Though Auckland secured a first innings lead, "Wellington avoided an outright defeat with comparative ease in the interprovincial cricket match at the Basin Reserve to-day and won the Plunket Shield. Wellington heat Canterbury and Otago outright and lost on the first innings to Auckland, scoring 18, points. Auckland scored an outrigut win over Otago and beat Cantrebury and Wellington on the first innings, scoring 16 points. To-day Auckland, replying to Wellington’s first innings total 152, made 235. A declaration in an effort to force an outright win was not made, the visiting captain preferring to let liis batsmen get runs quickly or get out. Wellington batted all the afternoon for 308 for five wickets, the feature being a great stand of 201 for the third wicket by Lamason, who played a brilliant innings for 127, and McLeod, who shaped very solidly for 94. Moloney and McLeod, opening for Wellington on a perfect batting wicket, took their time in putting up 55 in 75 minutes. Since Wellington could not will on the first innings, the only other game open to the home team was to prevent an outright win by Auckland. From a tactical point of view, the slow batting in the first two hours after lunch was justified. Some of the spectators, however, did not relish the dullness of the play and barracked the batsmen. However, after Moloney went, Lamson and McLeod, in a great partnership, put all prospect of a collapse out of count and made the shield safe for Wellington. McLeod took 215 minutes for 94. Following the cheap dismissal of Ell, Lamason attacked the bowling with resolution and effect. He reached 50 in 50 minutes, not being .troubled by the bowling, though he was dropped on the boundary at 77, going on to complete a brilliant century in 95 minutes. He was in for two hours for 127. For variety and soundness of stroke play, it was prol>a.bly the best innings lie has ever played for Wellington. The Auckland bowlers stood up to the heavy attack on the hard wicket with great determination, though they showed signs of tiredness after afternoon tea, when it became obvious that the fate of the shield was decided. Four wickets were down for 26, hut a fine fighting innings by Reeves, who played chanceless cricket, took the total to 105, all out just before stamps.
