FOXTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Feb. 11. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was hold last evening, Mr M. E. Porrcau (Mayor) presiding. Prior to the commencement of business councillors stood in silence for a few moments while a motion of sympathy was passed in connection with the death of King George. Rev. Ficlden Taylor, of the Wellington City Mission, wrote asking the council if it could assist in the providing of suitable camping ground to accommodate 150 persons over Christmas time and suitable for use as a convalescent camp for women with their families. Nearness to the sea or a river and playing areas, with electricity handy, was essential, while the site was required within fifty miles of Wellington. The treasurer reported that during December and January the sum of £3021 18s 6d was received and banked. The report was adopted and accounts amounting to £924 13s 6d passed lor payment. The waterworks foreman reported that 2,350,000 gallons of water had been pumped during January. The poundkeeper reported that three head of stock had boon impounded and 3s driving fees collected. The road foreman reported that the bitumen road surface in Johnston and Robinson Streets hud been patched, and also in Lady’s Mile. Avenue and Moutoa Roads and Duncan Street has been graded and the footpaths in Liddell "Street and Ravensworth Place top-dressed. Noxious w-ccds were grubbed in various streets. Owing to the heavy rain, the metal for mixing with tar was unprocurable. The town clerk reported that the amount if gas manufactured during January was 265,200 feet. The gas manager reported that during the month three sjot gas meters had been rifled and 5s in cash stolen. Damage amounting to £1 Is 6d was done to the meters. The matter was in the hands of the police. The Foxton Beach Improvement Society sought the -co-opera-tion of the council in having the FoxtonBcach highway tar-sealed. The Mayor said that the socio'ty was endeavouring to ob tain concerted action in this matter. The road was urgently in need of attention and he thought the request would receive sympathetic consideration from the council. The beach was a great asset to Foxton. G'r I). R. Barron considered the council should look after its own roads and leave the Manawatu County Council to look after its own. Cr F. Robinson said that the road was' a disgrace and the attention of the County Council should he drawn to it. It was decided to forward the leftci. to the , controlling local body. The Manawatu.' The Foxton , Racing Club made .application for the use of five acres of the Target Reserve as a | parking ground for ears.
