WOOL PRICES FIRM.
* THE LONDON SALES. Received January 18, 12.25 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 17. At the wool sales 8521 bales were ottered, including 2378 from New Zealand, and 7182 hales of Australian and New Zealand wool were sold. There was a moderate selection, containing a small supply of Australian Merinos winch, with New Zealand crossbreds, sold well to tiro home trade and the Continent at firm rates. New Zealand scoured Merino, branded RCO/f, 25d; half bred, top price, 23d, averaged 20d. A FAMOUS FIGURE. SIR JAMES HILL PASSES. Received January 18, 10.20 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 17. The death lias occurred of Sir James Hilly who was a pioneer in the wool trade and one of the biggest buyers in Australia and New Zealand. He operated before the era of public auctions. lie and the late Lord Barnby once bought nearly the whole of the New Zealand clip. His surviving son, Albert, inherits the title.
