GROWTH OF DAIRY INDUSTRY. NEW ZEALAND'S ENVIABLE POSITION. Tho growth of the dairy industry in New Zealand in 52 years has been equalled by no other country in tho world, Mr T. C. Brarii, chief executive officer to the New Zealand Dairy Board, told an audicnco of farmers and suppliers at tho annual inspection of the Tai Tapu Co-opera five Dairy Company’s factory in Canterbury. From 1883 to 1890 tho total butter and cheese exported from the country was 19,000 tons; from 1890 to 1900 it was 70,000 tens; fom 1900 to 1910 it was 226.000 tons; from 1910 to 1920 it was 598,000 tons; and from 1920 to 1930 the total was 1,350,000 tons. For the last period of only five years the total exports amounted to 1,000,000 tons. “We have reached the position whoro we can say that this small Dominion exports more dairy produce than any other country in the world,” said Mr Brash. “Further, not only does New Zealand send into the United Kingdom more butter than any other but also more choose. Twenty-seven per cent, of the butter imported into Great Britain conics from New Zealand, and 70 per cent, of tho cheese.

“Then take tho development in quality. Tho quality of New Zealand butter is such that when the purchasers the world over wish to purchase a butter that can be held for a period in cold storago without deterioration, they invariably buy New Zealand produce. Although thcro is still some room ,for improvement in tho quality of New Zealand cheese, it is famed even now for its uniform quality.” POTATO MARKET. £l6 A TON IN SOUTH ISLAND. Per Press Association. . CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 27. Intcest in the grain and produco market has, of course, continued to centre in potatoes, and the market has firmed another £1 since Tuesday. F.o.b. quotations are now £l6 a ton, and oven at that price there is very strong demand from Auckland.

It is now scorns definite from all northern reports that potatoes will bo wanted from hero till well into Novcmbor, and the prospects of the market aro entirely dependent on tho quantity of potatoes stiff held in Canterbury, either in storo or on farms. Fair quantities are still to come from both sources, but it appears highly doubtful whether there will bo enough to meet focal rcquiremdnts as well as keep Auckland supplied. It is perhaps significant that t.he. price for seed has gone up considerably, any seed being now Worth £5 to farmers. In some instances Auckland firms which earlier refused seed on the ground that it was too late for planting, and had criticised the quality of Canterbury potatoes, are now keen buyers, and it is not unlikely that some at least of this seed is going into consumption locally. Largo seed is being freely used for table consumption. A ship this week got away with a little more than 9000 sacks, a fair proportion of which was seed.

There has been a small trade in seeds with the country lately, but tho demand is not nearly as steady or as big as it is normally. Oats are unchanged, but there has been a. small inquiry for them recently in place of tho absolute neglect they suffered previously.

PUKEKOHE POTATO CROP. PUKEKOHE, Sept. 27. Small areas of the new season’s potatoes are being dug. ( The crops aro light and disappointing. It is evident that no quantity will be available till about the end of October. The price is firm at 3j,d per lb. WELLINGTON POULTRY MARKET. WELLINGTON, Sept. 28.
