(From Our Own Corcrspondent.) NEWBURY, Sept. 26.

The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday alternoon, when ,#_io was a very large attendance of iiKuilicrs and visitors, to whom Airs Shaw, the president, extended a welcome. After the business and correspondence had been dealt with, Miss J. Bradfield gave a very instructive address on gardening, her subject being “The Making ut a Rockery,’’ and she explained how to get different cuttings to grow, ote. Miss Bradtiekl distributee cuttings to the members. At tho close of tbc address Mrs Hamlin moved a vote of thanks to Miss Bradtield, also for judging the competition, which was for mo best arranged vase of dowers. This was won by Mrs. E. Lapp, with Airs W. Bcnberthy second ana Airs Saline third. The junior class rssuited: Aliss E. (Jhectham 1, Miss A:l. Linklater 2, Aliss \V. Burbury 3. It was a splendid competition and the judge had a very hard task to seiect the winners. A splendid lot of gifts were brought, for tlie Willard Home. The’ prizes for the competitions wore kindly donated by iVlcsdames AlcCulloch and Purton. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Alcsdames Linklater, Little, Lancaster and Aliss Linklaicr, and the door hostess was Aliss M. Paul. Two now members were elected. Airs E. Collins, junr., is at present. visiting her mother, Airs Galono, of Kimbolton. Air and Airs Tcir, of Wellington, have returned home after being the guests of Air and All's Hansen. The Newbury Hall was the sccno of much activity recently, the occasion being the iirst birthday of tho Newbury Women’s Institute. There was a very large gathering of members and friends and eveil/onc hid a most enjoyable time. The hall \iad been specially decorated with greenery, flowers and balloons of the institute colours, mauve and gold, and a welcome design v\s very artistic, done in mauve and gold violas. Apologies for absence were received from Miss Grant, president of the Northern Wellington Federation, Airs Short and Airs AlcCorkindale, also members of the federation, and Milson and Bunnythorpe Institutes. Mrs Shaw, the president extended a welcome to all present and hoped they would all enjoy this their first birthday. Airs Shaw and Airs McCulloch, the secretary, wore both presented with beautiful posies made by Aliss E. Chcctham and presented by two little tots, Alaiion Sanne and Ix>rna Pcuberthy. The evening wont _ with a swing from start, to finish, every item being on-, cored. The following contributed to the programme. Songs, Airs J. Russell and Air Whitclock; tap-dances. Miss Juno Scott; playette, “Early Birds,” the Newbury Drama Circle, this being very good indeed considering the circle has only been formed such a short time. Each player did her part well. The following wore those taking part: —Alcsdames Baker and Paterson, Aliases W. Burbury. AI. Paul, P. Simpson and A. Wild. Aliss Leamy and Aliss Cooper played tho accompaniments. After supper had been served, Airs Shaw called upon Mrs Little (the oldest member) to light tho candle on the beautiful birthday cake and Alis 3 M. Paul (tho youngest member) to blow it out. Airs A. Iv. Drew, of Sandon, on behalf of the Northern Wellington Federation, cut the cake, and expressed. her great pleasure at being present. She wished them a'very happy time and many more birthdays. Mrs Drew said she was very interested in Newbury as she had resided in this district years ago. Airs Grace, of Sandon, also extended birthday greetings and cut a slice of the cake. All's Loamy (president of the Ivairanga Institute) expressed her gregt pleasure at being present and conveyed from the Kairanga members birthday greetings, also cutting a slice of the cake. Tho vice-presidents, Alcsdames Hamlin and Choctham, cut a slice of cake each and' the junior members handed it round to all the guests. The cake was made by Airs Chccthain and decorated by Mrs D. Watson, of Palmerston North, and was a credit, to both ladies. At this short ■nterval. Airs Hamlin, on behalf of the Newbury Institute, thanked all llie performers for their items which wore most enjoyable, also all who had helped to make the evening such a great success. The following were the winners in (he novelty dances, etc., Lucky Gay Gordons. Aliss Al. Linklator and Mr R. Jenson ; Statue Log Cabin, Aliss Powell and Air C. Burmeister; lucky cup, Aliss N. Ross and Ken Maiden. Dancing was kcot going until a late hour, music heing supplied by a professional orchestra. The iced oako for competition was made and presented by Airs R. Purton and was won by Air S. Alorris. The committee wish to thank the following for thoir kind help and assistance: Alcssrs Al. Hansen, A. AlcCulloch, J. Scrimshaw and S. Alorris. The duties of AI.C. were ably carried out by Air Hansen. t The last euchre and dance of the season was held this week,' when there was a very large attendance and a very pleasant time was spent. The pi'ires were won as follow: Ladies, Airs Powell 1. Airs Draper 2; consolation, Mrs Laurence; men, Air T. Little 1. Air F. Rich 2; consolation, Mr Napier. The points prizes for the season were won as follow: T.odios, Airs Trask 1. Mrs Packer 2; men, Air Trask 1, Air H. AV. Crihb 2. The points prizes were kindlv donated by Mr Linklater M.P., Alcssrs Collinson and Cunninghame Ltd., Air E. W. Collins, and Mr J.. Chcntham.. After a good supper had been served dancing was kept going until midnight, tho music being supplied by a professional orchestra. The iced cake, which was kindly donated by Airs S, Death, was won by Airs C. Alorris, ’1 lie hosts for the evening were Alcssrs Hansen. McCulloch and W. Penlrorthv, and the hostesses wore Alcsdames Chccthain, ATcOullcch and Hansen. An extra was played by Air Powell. Tho Hall Committee wish to sincerely thank all those who have assisted in any wav with the euchre and dance gatherings during the year.
