WOODVILLE.

WOODVILLE, Sept. 25. The monthly meeting of the Woodvillo District High School Committee was held this week, Mr It. R. Johnston presiding. The acting-headmaster (Mr C. J. Bishop) submitted the following report:—Tile roll of the primary department at the end of the term was 260, and the average attendance 236.3, while the figures for the secondary school wore 26 and 22.35 respectively. The low averages were due to a slight epidemic of mumps. Sir Alfred llansom wrote acknowledging receipt of the committee’s resolution in reference to the staffing of schools, adding that it was hoped to bring up something definite very soon, and that lie was conferring with the Minister of Education. The secretary of the Methodist Ladies’ Bible Class applied for permission to hold a Bible class cump in the school next Easter and asked for temporary lighting.—On tile motion of Messrs Sinclair and Pilcher, permission was granttd subject to the approval of tile Education ed subject to the approval of the Education notified the appointment to the staff of Mi£s D. McKenzie, and that Misses JLf. F. Duff and J. P. Allison had been appointed relieving teachers. The board ulso advised that pending tho appointment of a permanent lioadmilster Mr C. J. Bishop would carry out the duties. It was decided to have tho cricket ground rolled within the next month and any holes filled in immediately. Mr Bishop stated that the cricket goal" was in good order, but four new balls were required. The broken fence on the boys’ ground is to bo repaired as soon as' possible. Tho headmaster was given authority to have a number of window draught-boards replaced. A well-attended meeting of Woodvillo retailers, convened by the Mayor (Mr 11. P. Horne) was hold in the Borough Council Chambers when many items of interest were discussed, and it was decided to form a retailors’ association. All present signified their intention of joining. Officers were appointed and a committee elected.

An enjoyable party was given by Mr and Mrs A. Harris, Mastertott Road, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their son, licnry. There were about 50 present and a happy time was spoilt in games, competitions, dancing and cards, 'flic music was played by Miss M. Spademan and Mr P. Parker.

Mr j. 11. Thompson, of Vogel Street, was knocked down last evening in Main Street, opposite Mr J. Horne’s residence. It is not known whether the accident was duo to a cyclist or a motorist, as Mr Thompson was rendered unconscious. Mrs J. Arm is I cad, ITopelamls, lias re turned home, after a visit to Wellington. Rev. G. W. Davidson is still away in the South Island, where his sister is very seriously ill.
