(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON. Sept. 11. Tho fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday ovoning. Present : —The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) and Crs. W. Clayton, T. C. Thwaites, J. Curran, junr.. K. It. Lind, 11. M. Mead, J. A. lloacli, and J. Curran senr. Tho Shannon Firo Brigade wrote stating that they agreed conditionally to tho suggestion made by tho council that a finance committee be set up to look after the brigade finances, such committee to consist of two members each from tho council and the brigade. The brigade wore unwilling to go to tho public very much for money’. , Ilowover, they would appoint two members, on the understanding that tho brigade would not ho expected to take full responsibility for condueting_ anything started by the committeo. The Palmerston North Hospital Board, replying to a communication from the council regarding the removal of indigent families to Shannon, said it was unlikely that any furthor families would bo moved from Palmerston Norifi to Shannon. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce asked the council to appoint a representative to act on the Safety First Committee. Tho committee would comprise representatives from various local bodies ' and other interested parties in the Mana- | watu district, and it was felt that such a committee could do a lot- of good work in I tho direction of preventing accidents. Cr IThwaites was appointed. Tho secretary of [the Shannon A. A. - and C. Club-asked for tho removal of tho pino treos from the south side of the Domain. Tho secretary I stated that the club wore ondeavouring to j raise money to improve tho running and cycling track and the roots wero breaking up the track and would continue to do so while tho stumps or treos wore loft standing. I culvert at East .Road had been constructed I and an inspection during tho rain had found it to be satisfactory. Guard posts on No. 60 main highway had been put in, and 35 chains of water tables cleaned. I Trees and shrubs in plots had been pruned, j also a number of now trees had been plantI ed. Repairs were required to a bridge in Vo-el Street crossing Stansoll Drain and authority was given for the work to bo carried out. It was resolved to write to the Railway Department asking that the drain near the lire brigade station bo cleaned to give an improved outlet. Tho works committee reported that the material for Nathan Terrace bridge was being ordered and the work would be commenced

:4iortly. , Messrs Best (chairman), Colo, Christian, Ventry-Sniith, IVarman, Xlarpur, Campbell, and the headmastor (Mr McDonald) were present at the monthly meeting of the School Committee held on Tuesday evening. It was resolved to record in the minutes tho head inspector’s report pointing out the very cfliciont manner in which tho school is controlled by Mr McDonald, and the excellent results obtained. Tho headmaster reported that the roll number was 305. Entries for the calf club competition totalled 21 and lamb competition 4. Miss ! Lindsay had commenced duties on the stuff, Miss J. Smith being granted six months’ leave of absence. Advice was received from Mr J. Linldater, M.P., that tho Minister of Education had approved of the additions to be made to tho headmaster’s residence for which he was accorded a vote of thanks.

Correspondence was received from the Education Board that repairs to buildings would be held over in the meantime and drainage requirements would bo utlended to at an early date. The work of painting the interior of the school was approved. It was resolved to write to the Borough Council pointing out that the present pipes were insufficient to carry storm-water from the horse paddock. Mr W. 11. Christian was welcomed back to the committee. Thanks were conveyed to Mr Ilydo and Mr W. McDonald for their assistance in raising the necessary funds to enable the school llugby representatives tc. journey to New Plymouth during the recent vacation. A re-union of the Shannon Football Club was held on Saturday evening when a large number were present, there being an attendance of over 100, including visitors from Otaki, Manakau, Levin, Foxton, and Pal-

merston North. Tho chair was occupied by Mr A. Richards (president of tho club) who, after the honouring of the various toasts, gave a brief outline of tho early history of tho club. Musical items were rendered by an instrumental trio from Manawatu, also songs by Messrs Richardson, Judd, Brady, Ponoko, and Kohikn, and several hakas by local Maoris. Tho evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all and was concluded at midnight with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Miss I. Finnerty is making satisfactory progress after her recent operation, and is expected home from hospital at an early date. Mr R. Neale is at present indisposed.
