ALLISON BRILLIANT.
AAIERICAN SINGLES TTTLF
WOOD OVERWHELMED. Received September 13, 12.25 p.m. FOREST HILLS, Sept. 12. In a 49-minutes match, the shortest in the history of the American championships, Allison smothered Wood, 6—2, 6—2, 6—3. From the first game which Allison won after Wood had taken a 40 love lead, the outcome was never in doubt. Oil occasions Wood displayed sparkling tennis, only to be overcome by Allison’s unbeatable shots. Allison was particularly effective at the net. Time after time he returned hard volleys for “kills,” and when Wood tried to lob over his head Allison’s overhead smashes were working with perfection. Wood was only able to break his opponent’s service once, which was in the first game of the second set, on Allison’s errors.
The crowd of 7000 only half filled the stadium. EXHIBITION MATCH.
In a mixed doubles exhibition match, following the championship, J. G. Hall nnd Mrs P. AI. King beat Gregory Alangin and Aliss Juan Hartigan, 6—4, 6—2. As both men are hard drivers they largely took the play from their women partners. It was Aliss Hartigan’s first competitive play ill America. Her game showed a lack of practice and she experienced particular trouble with her service, failing to win a single one. She lost once on two consecutive double faults.
