In the final of tho women’s tennis singles, Aliss Helen Jacobs beat Airs Palrrey-Fabyan, 6—2, o—4. Alore than 14,000 spectators witnessed tlie greatest upsep of the tennis year when Allison beat Perry, V—s, o—3, 6—3. AVood beat Grant, 6— 2, 4—6, 12—10. 6—2. In defeating the highly-rated Budge and creating a surprise in tho United States lawn tennis championship yesterday, tho diminutive “Bitsy” Grant again played his favourite role of thwarting the tennis aspirations of leading American contenders for championship honours. AVhen tho postponed match, was resumed in the third set Grant was leading 2—l. Budge displayed the hard attack which brought lum success in Europe and managed to squeeze a 7 —5 win. In tho fourth his terrific drives continued to function and he gained a 3—2 30 —love lead, but here Grant rallied, broke through the service and, reverting to a prudent back-court game, forced Budge into a series of errors to take the last four games and the match.
