(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURST, Sept. 11. A team from the Aorungi Ping Pong Club visited Ashhurst this week, when an enjoyable evening was spent. During supper, Mr R. Osborne took the opportunity of welcoming the visiting team, ami Mr K. Durie suitably replied. .The homo learn won the match 34 games to 30. The third birthday of the Ashhurst Women’s Institute was celebrated in the hall on Tuesday. In spite of the inclement weather lliere was a large audience present; visitors from Whaknroiigo, Woodvillc, and Wanganui all helped to enlarge the gathering and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon's entertainment. Congratulations from various institutes were received, also a telegram of birthday greetings from Mrs Fenwick (a former president), who is now residing in Clive. The president (Airs Flowers) welcomed all those present. The programme was presented as follows: —Opening item, pianoforte duet, Mesdames Hyndman and Havill; solo. Airs Hanlon (Woodville). “Play to Ale Gipsy.” her encore being “Waggon Wheels” (the aecompaniste was Airs 0. Kerrigan); nlayotte, members of the institute, entitled “Aunt Lizzie’s Friend.” This was very well acted, the cast being: .Mrs Soaring. Airs Gairiford; Stella, Miss Youlo; Miss Wimple, Afiss E. Thorne: Aunt Lizzie, Aliss M. Tremewan; Aunt Lizzie’s friend, Airs K. Havill; Mrs Snobbe-Cranston, Aliss W. Harris; Martha. Aliss L. Crammer; Airs Jefferson White. Airs Cook. Several interesting competitions were held; the first was for something put in a cake that is not usually used, .Mrs K. Havill being the winner. Another well-known competition, passing the parcel around, was won by Airs Hackett. Results for the monthly competition for the best arranged vase of spring flowers in the adults’ section were as follows: —Airs A. Currie 1, Airs Brown 2, Airs Havill 3; junior section, Alisses A. Dobson and V Aluidrock, tied for first. The winner of the potato-growing competition was Airs H. Alan!. A pleasing feature of the afternoon was the interest taken whilst Mrs Fdmond cut the beautiful birthday cake, which was mode by Airs McLacbU n and tastefully decorated by Airs Hyndman. The three candles on the cake were lit by Airs Patou, senr., and ex- | tinguisbed by the oldest member of the in- I statute, Airs Neale.
