POST BOX RIFLED.

CASE AT AUCKLAND. NEW THEORY ADVANCED. AUCKLAND, Aug. 1. Another postal pillar box was forced open last night and a quantity of mail matter stolen. When the mail collector went to clear the -posting box in New Bond Street, off Eden Terrace, shortly after midnight, be found the padlock had been wrenched off. The box was empty. The matter was immediately reported to the police. About two weeks ago no fewer than nine of the signal red boxes between Great South Road and Otahulni were forced open and the contents stolen. Until last night no further boxes had been tampered with. The periodic thefts from letter posting boxes are puzzling the polico There is a suggestion that the thief or thieves'are not in search of money, although some time ago a number of letters posted were stolen, but that they may for various reasons wish to intercept letters which they have cause to think have been posted in certain boxes. Some time ago a discovery was made which would seem to support this theory. It was found that among a number of letters which were proved to have been posted before a particular box in Grey Lynn was rifled, was one which contained a £1 note. The letter containing the note, as well as other letters, was not taken by the thief.
