DISASTROUS FIRE.
BLAZE AT RAGLAN. THREE SHOPS DESTROYED. RAGLAN, Aug. 1. A disastrous outbreak of fire occurred in Raglan shortly after eight o’clock last night when three shops between Gilmour’s Building and the Post Office in Bow Street were totally destroyed. A passer-by noticed flames issuing from an unoccupied tobacconist shop' and notified the police and telephone exchange. Ln a short time a large bucket brigade was operating but the flames spread in an alarming manner. In twenty minutes the three shops were blazing, the flames reaching a great height. The brigade then concentrated on saving Gilmour’s. and the Post Office. Only tank water was available, and the fire was anxiously watched in fear lest the supply of water should give out before the flames were sufficiently subdued as to be no longer a menace to adjoining buildings. By the early hours of this morning the fire had burnt itself out. Gilmour’s shop was undamaged, but in the Post Office there were several cracked windows.
