MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Jessie May Osborne aged 18. and Hazel Margaret Howard, another young woman, appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates Court at Palmerston North, to-day, on a charge that they were deemed to be idle and disorderly persons, with insufficient lawful visible means of support. Both pleaded guilty. Semor-ber-gcant Moriarty said tliat both the accused had been consorting with Chinamen and inquiries had revealed that they had very bad antecedents in Wellington, which they had left to escape police supervision. Commenting that Osborne appeared to be the ringleader, the Magistrate sentenced her to twelve months’ detention in the W ellington Borstal Institute to teach her a lesson. He admitted Howard to twelve months probation, on condition that she returned home and stayed there. He warned her that if she got into any further trouble she would receive a like sentence to that of her companion. Frederick Samuel Handley was charged that, on November 19, at Bunnythorpe, he forged a dairy order for £1 10s, purporting to be signed by T. Taylor and caused a stock mineral company, of Hamilton, to act upon it as if it we'e genuine. On the application of Detective Sergeant Bickerdike. who stated that inquiries had not been completed, accused was remanded to appear again on July 24.
