TRAMPING ACTIVITIES.

MANAWATU CLUB. “During fhe year fourteen well-at-tended committee meeting have been held, and the club membership now stands at 69,” states the seventh annual report of the Manaawtu Tramping Club in chronicling an interesting year’s activities. “The rules were amended in December to provide for the inclusion of country members at a reduced subscription. The club magazine, ‘Beech Leaves’ was inaugurated after the last meeting, and ten issues have appeared. “Twenty-four trips were held, and one was abandoned. In August, 1934, our first official winter sports party went to Tongariro National Park, eleven members participating. Keen interest was shown in the second combined sports meeting at Poliangitia. The Iluahine Club donated a trophy for competition between the clubs_, and, in spite of strenuous opposition, annexed it for themselves. Thirteen took part in the Christmas trip to the Ketetahi side of National Park. This was another enjoyable trip and increased our knowledge. Perhaps the most outstanding trip of the year was to the Ohakune Hut, at Easter. Of the 22 members, 20 made a successful accent of Ruapehu Peak in perfect weather. “A much appreciated innovation has been the night tramps. The five which were held were all well attended. Work parties this year were confined to reconditioning Roberts’s Hut. It is suggestedv that the cutting of tracks across the Oliau river flats should be undertaken in tlie near future. A donation of £3 3s was made to the hut fund of the recently formed Rangiwahia Ski Club. We congratulate them on their enterprise in opening up another area for winter sports. Reports and bulletins from the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand have kept us in touch with their doings. In particular, the huts and reserves committees have continued their valuable work. The library still serves a useful purpose, and it is hoped that more use will be made of it when it can be housed in the club room. Reports, programmes and bulletins were exchanged with 22 clubs. “We wish to congratulate the social committee, especially its energetic secretary, on conducting another successful year. The club expresses its thanks to Messrs D. MacPhereon, L. Plimmer, J. Stevens and K. Ross for addresses, to Miss Pullman and to all others who have assisted the club in any way, including property owners wlio allow us right-of-way.”
