EXPRESS HELD UP.
BRIDGE INCIDENT. MOTOR CAR ON LINE. AVI ion the driver of a ear crossing the combined railway and road traffic bridge at Ngawapurua, near AVoodville on Monday, failed to notice the route off the railway to the road and drove on down the line, an express train was held up for half an hour. The driver of the car was Mr D. J. It. McKcnaic, a son of an Apiti farmer, and also in the vehicle were Messrs J. Power, of Feikling, and J. Fowell, of Apiti. The driver of the car was so intent on keeping his vehicle astride the rails that ho failed to notice the turnoff, says the Paliiatua Herald. Ho was then faced with the problem of . hacking over the sleepers or driving on for 200 yards to a crossing. He chose the latter course, with the express waiting on the W'oodville side of the bridge. The car driver overshot the next gate leading off the line and then had to continue for another quarter of a mile to a branch’ road crossing the line on the way to a private residence. The only damage the car suffered was punctures to two tyres.
