RAILWAY CROSSINGS.

IMPROVEMENTS IN PROSPECT. Improvements to the Princess Street railway level crossing and to the Cemetery Road crossing at Kelvin Grove by the Railway Department are in prospect. Many complaints have been made by motorists concerning the severity of the rise over the rails at the Princess Street crossing, and it is now learned that it is the intention of the department very shortly to deal with this crossing similarly to the manner in which those in the Square have been treated. Instead of using fish-plate joints which produce friction, the rails are to be welded to make them settle more solidly, and then check and carry-over rails are to be laid, after which the relatively smooth surface obtained will be asphalted. Improvements at the Cemetery Road crossing are to follow.
