Y.M.C.A. NOTES

(By “X.") “Red!”, “Black 1”, “Come on, WooUys!” These and other sounds assail the ears every Wednesday night, when a packed gallery of spectators follow closely every, move of the games in the interhouse basketball competition. Both sections are being keenly contested. 11l the ladies’ section, Rosco and J. R. McKenzie’s are in the lead from I’.D.C. and Hosiery Factory by two points. Berry’s hold the lead in the men’s section from Hopwood’s and City Council A-.by the same dose margin. In both sections praise is due to those teams who are playing their first season’s basketball hut are nevertheless putting up very good games. In the gymnasium competition of men’s games, Scotland, under the captaincy of Ken Burne, are maintaining a good lead over the other three teams. But Ireland have something up their sleeves! The gymnasium classes are attracting good attendances, every week-day seeing numbers making tracks towards the open doors of the Y.M.C.A. In the men’s classes a good hot pace is appreciated, and one comes from a cold shower tingling all over with warmth and fitness.

The soccer teams are beginning to get into their stride now. The fourth grade won their last three games, while the fifth won one and drew two. At the annual meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, recently, the following officers were elected : —President, Mrs It. A. Tims; vice-president, Mrs E. West; secretary-treasurer, Mrs S. G. Nor they.' This auxiliary is keenlv interested in the association, and their invaluable help is greatly appreciated. Every Tuesday sees numbers of Optimists congregating for luncheon at Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s to hear speakers with a diversity of interests hut a common standard of excellence. The club has been very fortunate in its choice of speakers, and appreciation is shown by the membership of 53. A game of basketball was played recently between the Hi-Y Club and the senior men. The seniors won, 31 —6. but tlie Hi-Y players kept them fully extended. The Hi-Y ran a social and dance the other night which was greatly enjoyed. Some impromptu exhibition dances were given. The gymnasium dances are proving verv popular again this year, as is witnessed by the numbers attending. A keen committee works hard to attain this end, and we appreciate their endeavours. The ladies’ class are evincing keen interest in their tenikoit games. A recent visitor to the business men’s class on 3 weeks’ furlough from Wellington was so impressed with the work done in. and the benefit received from, this class that the following Monday morning saw him joining up with the Wellington Gym. The High School boys’ class is looking forward with particular interest to the gym. display.
