The local Rugby thirds played Oroua Downs on the homo ground to-day, and after a keenly contested game \yon by 9 points to 3. Burgess (Rongotea) won the toss and decided to defend the northern goal. The pace was on from the outset, both teams being evenly matched, and neither side gaining much advantage. Finally from rucking play among the forwards the ball was worked clear to the Rongotea backs for Thompson to secure to band on to Eades, the winger forcing his way over in flic cornor and gaining the opening try. Burgess failod to convert. The Downs were on their mettle now and forced the pace, but they failed to get through the defence, hard forward play being the rulo with occasional back movements. From a line-out Rongotea broke through for Burgess, who was playing a great game, to take the ball well down into yellows’ territory, one of the latter players being penalised for holding on. Burgess piloted the ball between the posts to increase the lead to 6 points. Forward play became very interesting and the Downs men broke through several times, but failed to score when the opportunity came. Following half-time Rongotea kicked of! for the ball to be returned to Glasgow, the local full-back, who lined out well down with a good kick. Burgess and Wallace broke through again, and in an effort to clear one of the Downs side came into play off-side. Burgess took the kick und added another three points. The yellows then went to the attack, and one of their players snapped up the hall and scored a well deserved try. The visitors for awhile had the advantage and kept the home team defending. One of the blacks was penalised in front of the goal, and what looked like three more points for the visiting team failed to materialise. Play went up and down without further alteration to the score and Rongotea won by 9 points to 3.
