Constable R. Purvey, of Palmerston North, is now relieving at Foxton in the absenco on annual leave of Constable Boyd.

Air J. H. "Whyte, secretary of the Alanawatu Rugby Football Union, was admitted to Hospital on Saturday to undergo an operation for appendicitis. Mr Jos. Batchelar, president of the Alanawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association, in company with Air H. E. Kissling, secretary of the association, leaves for Hamilton this evening to attend the annual winter show of the AVaikato A. and P. Association.

The friends of Air and Airs A. IC. Drew, of Sanson, will regret to learn that their sonfi Air Winston Drew, lias that their son, Air AVinston Drew, has appendicitis in Palmerston North. The condition of Air Drew, junr., showed an improvement this morning. Air E. Fisher, consulting engineer to the Palmerston North River Board, acting on medical advice recently went north to Auckland to undergo an operation. It was mentioned at today’s meeting of the hoard by the chairman (Air A. E. Alansford) that Air Fisher had come through the operation successfully and was making favourable progress. Air G. Hutton, of New Plymouth, acoompanied by Airs Hutton, is visiting Palmerston North. A number of years ago Air Hutton was a member of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand in Palmerston North. After leaving this centre in 1906 he setved the bank in Gisborne, Auckland, New Plymouth and in the King Country and South Taranaki, finally retirin" on superannuation to reside in New Plymouth.

Air H. E. AYest, chemist to the AA’heat Research Institute, will leave New Zealand on Juno 1 for a trip to the United States and Canada to study up-to-date milling and processing practice in the" handling of wheat and oats. Air AYest will he away from the Dominion for about three months. His tour will include visits to Los Angeles, San Francisco, A'ancouver. Edmonton (Alberta), Saskatoon, AA’innipeg, Afinneapolis, Alilutaiikee, Chicago, Saint Louis, and across back to Los Angeles.

Air C. E‘. Brian, senior supervisor of the postal branch at Palmerston North for tho past 2.j years, has received notice ot his impending transfer to the Chief Post Office at "Wellington as a supervisor in the mail branch. Prior to taking up his duties at this centre. Air Brian was for 2J years supervisor of the clerical branch at Hamilton. He has proved a very popular and courteous official, and during his stay in Palmerston North lias made many friends. Air Brian takes up his new appointment in about a month s time. His successor at this centre has not yet been announced. The Aledallion Paulus-Aeinilius, awarded yearly by the Cercle International to the Catholic student, foreign to Europe, under 25 years of age. showing the greatest scholarship in some branch of French literature, has this year been won jointly bv Aliss Eileen Alarie Lord, of Greymouth, New Zealand, and Rev. Francis J. Lahemanii. of the United States. The prize, which was first competed for in 1899, is bestowed on the candidate showing the greatest excellence in a self-chosen essay of 3000 words In view of the high standard of the work submitted, the Cercle has decided to award two medals this year. These will he oresmted to nrixies of the winners at Rouen, on September 29. the occasion of the Feast of St Alichael.
